Massolino Barolo Parussi 2022

Massolino Barolo Parussi is the only Massolino cru grown outside Serralunga, on a ridge just over the boundary in Castiglione Falletto.

Piemontese tradition calls it the egg outside the nest, though Parussi is barely away from home: the vineyard sits on a ridge right alongside the Serralunga border. The soils are blue, iron-rich Sant'Agata marls carrying more silt and less clay and limestone than Serralunga, which makes for more vigorous vines and a distinctly different wine within the Massolino range. The family was drawn by the exposure, which runs southeast to southwest, by vines now approaching sixty years of age, and by the 290-metre altitude. Early releases from the site called for patience in the cellar; the wines have grown steadily more refined, and Giovanni Massolino considers the vineyard to have found its stride. As with all the crus, fermentation is in large oak fermenters and ageing is exclusively in large casks.

More approachable than the Serralunga crus, though it will still reward a decade. Serve at 16–18°C with braised veal, agnolotti del plin or a mushroom risotto.
