Description
Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda Etichetta Nera Riserva in magnum is the black-label Riserva from Serralunga's most revered vineyard.
Massolino has farmed Vigna Rionda since 1956, adding parcels in 1967, 1985 and 1987 to become the site's largest owner with 3.5 hectares under vine. The cru sits on the Lequio Formation, the oldest soil in Barolo, with very little topsoil and a limestone content of about twenty per cent among oxidised iron and other mineral elements — enough to restrain vine vigour and bring the Nebbiolo to full phenolic ripeness. Altitude runs from 250 to 360 metres, and the south-southwest aspect keeps northerly wind and frost off the vines. The family selects strictly, bottling only around a third of the potential volume under this label. Fermentation takes place in large wooden vats and ageing in botti, and the wine is released only as a Riserva, with a minimum of six years behind it. A magnum slows the whole process down further.
A wine for the long cellar; decant if you open it early. Serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, game or aged Castelmagno.
