Massolino Dolcetto d'Alba 2020

Massolino Dolcetto d'Alba is a Serralunga-grown Dolcetto from a producer far better known for its Barolo.

Dolcetto d'Alba DOC sits in the Langhe hills of Piedmont, where Dolcetto ripens earlier than Nebbiolo and traditionally gave growers something to drink while the Barolo slept in cask. It is a grape of low acidity and gentle tannin, usually made without oak. Massolino has farmed in Serralunga d'Alba since 1896, and the fruit for this wine comes from a well-positioned 3.2-hectare holding within the Serralunga commune, with recent releases also drawing on the family's Cascina I Maschi vineyard in Monforte d'Alba. The winemaking is straightforward and reductive, aimed at preserving the variety's dark fruit and the faintly bitter almond finish that marks good Dolcetto. The wine is bottled under screwcap.

Made to be drunk young, within two or three years of release. Serve at 16°C, or lightly chilled in warm weather, with charcuterie, pizza or a plate of vitello tonnato.
