Description
Massolino Dolcetto d'Alba is a Serralunga estate's steel-raised Dolcetto, a wine it has bottled since 1896.
Dolcetto ripens earlier than Nebbiolo and generally takes the Langhe sites that Nebbiolo does not want, giving a red of deep colour, low acidity and soft, chalky tannin, made for the table rather than the cellar. Massolino has produced one since 1896. The fruit traditionally comes from 3.2 well-placed hectares within the Serralunga d'Alba boundary, and recent releases also draw on the estate's Cascina I Maschi vineyard at Monforte d'Alba. Only the best of the Dolcetto crop is used for this bottling; the remainder is sold in bulk. Raising is entirely in stainless steel tanks, with no oak at any point, which keeps the fruit direct and the tannin unencumbered. The wine is sealed under screwcap, a sensible choice for a bottle meant to be opened young.
Drink over the next three years; serve at 16°C with salumi, pizza or a rich tomato-based pasta.
