Description
Massolino's Dolcetto d'Alba comes largely from vineyards inside the Serralunga d'Alba commune, better known for Barolo.
Massolino has been based at Serralunga since 1896, and the Dolcetto is one of the oldest wines in the range. It is traditionally cropped from an ideally positioned 3.2 hectares within the Serralunga postcode, and recent releases have also drawn on fruit from the family's Cascina I Maschi vineyard at Monforte d'Alba. Only the best Dolcetto goes into this bottling; the rest is sold off in bulk. The wine is raised entirely in stainless steel, the customary approach for the variety, which keeps the crunchy black cherry fruit and floral lift in the foreground and lets Dolcetto's soft acidity and gentle tannin do the rest. It is sealed under screwcap, which suits a wine intended to be drunk in its first years rather than cellared.
Drink young, within two or three years of release. Serve at 16°C, or a shade cooler, with salumi, roast pork or a plate of agnolotti.
