Description
Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo blends declassified Serralunga Barolo fruit with two cooler outlying sites for an earlier-drinking Nebbiolo.
Langhe Nebbiolo is the everyday face of Piedmont's great grape: the same variety as Barolo and Barbaresco, grown either outside the delimited crus or held back from them, and raised for a shorter time. Massolino draws on three roughly equal sources. The first is parcels in Serralunga that do not make the cut for the cru wines, in effect declassified Barolo fruit. The second is Cascina I Maschi on the edge of Monforte d'Alba, a cool, chalky site that lifts the perfume and freshness. The third is a parcel at Alba on lighter sandy-clay soils, which supplies flesh and fruit generosity. Vinification takes place in concrete with deliberately gentle extraction, and the wine spends twelve months in large Slavonian oak casks, as all Massolino Nebbiolo does, rather than the twenty-four months or more given to the Barolo.
Ready now and good for five years or so. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, tomato-braised sausages or a plate of salumi.
