Description
Massolino Langhe Riesling comes from three clones planted in 2014 at the top of a windswept limestone parcel in Monforte d'Alba.
Riesling is an outlier in the Langhe, where Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto dominate, and it is permitted here under the broad Langhe DOC. Massolino, a Serralunga family better known for Barolo, planted the variety in 2014 on rocky, limestone-rich soils at the apex of a cool, exposed hill in Monforte d'Alba, between roughly 450 and 500 metres. The altitude and the wind hold acidity while the calcareous soil supplies the chalky grip that runs through the wine. After several years of trials with amphora, steel and various oak formats, the fruit now ferments exclusively in a single 5,000-litre cement tank and rests on lees there for nine months, which builds texture without introducing oak. The result is a taut, saline reading of Riesling rather than a floral one.
Drink over the next five to eight years; it will gain weight with time. Serve at 10-12°C with crab, tempura vegetables or a young pecorino.
