Description
Massolino Moscato d'Asti is a lightly sparkling, low-alcohol sweet white made in very small quantities by a Serralunga Barolo house.
Moscato d'Asti DOCG covers a stretch of hills between Asti, Alba and Acqui in southern Piedmont. It is made by arresting a single fermentation in pressure tank while sugar and carbon dioxide remain, which gives a wine of around five per cent alcohol with a soft, incomplete sparkle rather than the full pressure of a sparkling wine. Massolino is far better known for Barolo, and its Moscato is a small production drawn from hand-harvested fruit, with a good proportion of the vines rooted in the calcareous soils of Serralunga d'Alba. That site gives a more savoury and structured reading of the style than the sweeter, more overtly grapey examples the appellation is usually associated with.
Drink young, within a year or two, while the sparkle and aromatics are at their best. Serve at 8°C with fresh peaches, panettone or a plate of hazelnut biscuits.
