Description
Massolino's Moscato d'Asti is a lightly sparkling, low-alcohol sweet wine from Piedmont, drawn in part from vines at Serralunga d'Alba.
Moscato d'Asti is made from Moscato Bianco, which is Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, by arresting a single partial fermentation under pressure, so that the wine keeps grape sugar, a gentle frizzante and an alcohol level of around five per cent. Massolino is best known for its Barolo from Serralunga d'Alba, and the Moscato is a small production alongside it, made in limited quantity from hand-harvested fruit. A good portion of the vines are rooted in the calcareous marl of Serralunga, which gives a more savoury and structured version of the style than the fruit-driven norm, with meadow freshness, chalky texture and clearly articulated white fruit. It is bottled under screwcap and intended to be drunk while its aromatics are at their freshest.
Drink it young and cold, at 8–10°C, with hazelnut cake, panettone, fresh peaches or on its own in the afternoon.
