Description
Massolino Moscato d'Asti is a lightly sparkling, low-alcohol sweet white made in small volume, with a good share of the fruit grown on the limestone of Serralunga.
Moscato d'Asti DOCG covers the hills between Asti, Alba and Acqui, where Moscato Bianco, the Italian name for Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, has been grown for centuries. The wines are made by arresting a single fermentation under pressure, which leaves them gently frizzante, sweet and around five per cent alcohol. Massolino is a Serralunga d'Alba estate far better known for Barolo, and it makes this in limited quantity from hand-harvested fruit, a good portion of it rooted in the prime calcareous soils of the home commune. That limestone component gives a more savoury, more structured version of the style than the norm, without losing the floral character of the grape. The wine is bottled early and young so that its aromatics stay intact.
Drink as young as possible, within a year or two, with fresh stone fruit, panettone or an almond tart, or on its own in the afternoon. Serve at 8°C.
