Description

Massolino Moscato d'Asti is a lightly sparkling, low-alcohol sweet white made in small quantities by a Serralunga Barolo house.

Moscato d'Asti comes from the hills between Asti and Cuneo and is made by the Asti method, in which the fermentation of the fresh must is arrested under pressure in tank, retaining natural sugar and a gentle spritz while keeping alcohol at around five per cent. Massolino is far better known for Barolo, and its Moscato is a small-volume sideline drawn from hand-harvested grapes, with a good portion grown on the calcareous soils of Serralunga. That limestone gives a more savoury and structured version of the style than the usual example, with the balance between sweetness and acidity held tight rather than left soft. Giovanni Angeli oversees the wine, and the frothy, low-alcohol format is meant to be drunk young.

Drink it as fresh as possible, within a year or so of release, and serve well chilled at around 8°C with fruit tarts, panettone or a plate of peaches.
