Description
Massolino Moscato d'Asti is a lightly sparkling, low-alcohol sweet wine made in small quantity, with much of the fruit grown on Serralunga's calcareous soils.
Moscato d'Asti DOCG covers the hills between Asti, Alba and Acqui, where Moscato Bianco is picked early and fermentation is halted under pressure while the wine is still sweet and only gently frizzante, leaving around five per cent alcohol. Massolino is best known for Barolo, and the family brings the same source-driven thinking to this wine: the grapes are hand-harvested and a good portion come from the prime chalky soils of Serralunga d'Alba, which give a more savoury and structured result than the softer, sandier sites usually used for the style. Production is deliberately limited. Made under Giovanni Angeli, it is a benchmark version of a wine that is often treated casually, balancing sweetness against genuine acidity rather than simply tasting of sugar.
Drink young, within a year or two of release, while the fizz and freshness are at their best. Serve well chilled at 8-10°C with fruit tarts, panettone or on its own after a long lunch.
