Description
Massolino's Moscato d'Asti is a benchmark example of Piedmont's lightly sparkling sweet white, made in small quantities by a house better known for Barolo.
Moscato d'Asti comes from Moscato Bianco grown in the hills between Asti and Alba, pressed gently and fermented at low temperature in sealed tanks, with the ferment halted while natural sugar and a light spritz remain. Alcohol usually sits around five and a half per cent, which makes it one of the few genuinely sweet wines that can be drunk by the glass without much consequence. Massolino is based at Serralunga d'Alba and has farmed there since 1896, and a good part of the fruit for this wine is rooted in Serralunga's prime calcareous soils. That limestone influence, together with hand harvesting and the estate's usual restraint, gives a more savoury and complex reading of the style than the norm without losing any of its charm. It is bottled under screwcap and made in limited volume each year.
Drink it young and cold, with fruit desserts, almond biscuits or simply on its own after a meal. Serve at 8-10°C.
