Description
Müller-Catoir Bürgergarten Im Breumel Grosses Gewächs Riesling comes from a walled parcel the estate owns outright, its only GG bottling.
Im Breumel is a historic walled section, a clos in all but name, within the Haardter Bürgergarten vineyard in the Pfalz. Müller-Catoir's legendary former winegrower Hans-Günther Schwarz always insisted this parcel was the greatest single site of the Mittelhaardt, and today it gives the estate its only Grosses Gewächs. Exclusively owned by the domaine, this uppermost part of the Bürgergarten is sheltered by a sandstone wall that creates a warmer microclimate; facing south-east, it warms quickly in the morning and cools soon after sunset thanks to the neighbouring forest. The soil is poorer than the lower Bürgergarten, pure mottled-yellow sandstone gravel with a high proportion of decomposed stone. Yields are held to a very low 28 to 30 hectolitres per hectare, farming is organic, and one third of the wine was fermented and matured in 1,000-litre oak vessels.
Worth five years in the cellar and capable of fifteen or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, scallops or a mature alpine cheese.
