Müller-Catoir Gimmeldinger Schlössel Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese 375ml 2009

Müller-Catoir Gimmeldinger Schlössel Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare botrytised sweet wine from Rieslaner, a Silvaner–Riesling crossing that the Pfalz has made its own.

Müller-Catoir, at Haardt near Neustadt, is one of the historic estates of the Pfalz and has long been the leading exponent of Rieslaner, a 1921 crossing of Silvaner and Riesling that ripens late, keeps ferocious acidity and is unusually prone to noble rot — the combination that makes it so well suited to the highest Prädikat levels. The Gimmeldinger Schlössel site sits on the warm sandstone and loam soils of the Mittelhaardt. A Trockenbeerenauslese is picked berry by berry from fruit fully affected by botrytis, in quantities measured in litres rather than hectolitres, and ferments very slowly to a low alcohol with a great deal of residual sugar. The result is unctuous but carried by the variety’s acidity rather than weighed down by sugar.

Fully mature and capable of holding for many years yet; serve at 8–10°C in small glasses with apricot tart, aged Comté or blue cheese, or on its own.
