Description
Müller-Catoir Gutswein is a one-litre house wine, the base VDP tier, blended from across the estate's holdings.
Gutswein is the entry classification in the VDP hierarchy, covering wines blended from a range of estate fruit rather than tied to a single village or site. Müller-Catoir bottles this one in litre format and sells most of it to restaurants near the winery in the Pfalz; it is not usually exported, and the Australian allocation has always been small. The blend is at least eighty-five per cent Riesling, with lesser amounts of Rieslaner, Scheurebe and Weissburgunder, the German name for Pinot Blanc. Rieslaner and Scheurebe are both German crossings with pronounced aromatics, and in small proportions they lift a wine of this kind without unbalancing it. The fruit comes off the sandstone slopes of the Haardt hills, and the wine is made for immediate drinking rather than keeping.
Drink within two or three years; serve at 10-11°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or cold cuts and pickles.
