Description

Müller-Catoir Haardt Riesling is the estate's village-level dry Riesling, drawn from several sites around its home commune.

In the VDP classification the village wine sits above the estate bottlings and below the classified single vineyards, and as in Burgundy these commune-level wines can take in fruit from more than one site, including declassified material from the classified vineyards. Müller-Catoir farms organically at Haardt, in the Mittelhaardt. This version includes young-vine fruit from the Grosses Gewächs Bürgergarten vineyard along with the classified sites of Herzog, Mandelring and Herrenletten, all on the sandy, sandstone-based soils below the Haardt Mountains. The fruit was slowly crushed, allowing a degree of skin contact, and the wine was then raised in steel tank. The result is lithe and dry, with the saline, mineral character of the house, and reads as a scaled-up version of the estate's basic Riesling with a little more drive and sustain.

Drink over the next six to eight years, with roast pork, grilled fish or a Vietnamese salad. Serve at 10 to 12°C.
