Description

Müller-Catoir Herzog Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare botrytis wine from the Haardt's Herzog vineyard, bottled at 443 grams per litre of residual sugar.

Rieslaner is a Sylvaner and Riesling crossing developed in 1921, little planted anywhere but important in this domaine's history. Hans-Günter Schwarz, cellar master here from 1962 to 2002, brought it to Müller-Catoir and planted it in the Herzog vineyard at Haardt, where he made a series of now almost unobtainable sweet wines; Martin Franzen has continued the line since 2003. The variety's readiness to take botrytis while holding very high acidity makes it the estate's most dependable source of sweet wine, and mass-selection cuttings from Herzog have since been planted at Gimmeldinger Schlössel, on poor sandstone at the foot of the Haardt Mountains. The estate farms organically. This is a Degree Oechsle bottling made from a selection of extremely shrivelled berries: 6 per cent alcohol, 12.3 grams per litre of acidity and 443.6 grams of residual sugar.

Effectively immortal, and needed only in very small glasses. The domaine suggests 10 to 12°C from a large red-wine glass, with blue cheese, a fruit tart, or on its own.
