Murdoch Hill Vis-à-Vis Cabernet Franc 2021

Murdoch Hill Vis-à-Vis Cabernet Franc is a medium-bodied Adelaide Hills Cabernet Franc.

This is the fourth release of a wine Michael Downer builds along Loire lines, spicy and sappy and high-toned, from the Oakbank vineyard's sandy loam, lightly peppered with quartz. That ground gives him the violet-and-red-fruit profile he is after, a different proposition from the herbal, heavily structured Franc most Australian growers end up with. The fruit was picked by hand and fully destemmed, then racked into French barrique, only a tenth of it new, where it rested ten months. Cabernet Franc on its own remains rare in the Adelaide Hills.

Violets, raspberry and crushed green peppercorn, with a sappy, leafy thread. Medium-bodied and bright, the tannins fine and brisk. Serve slightly cool at 15 degrees with roast pork, grilled tuna or goat's cheese and beetroot.
