Description
Navazos Niepoort is an unfortified, barrel-fermented Palomino table wine from the Macharnudo Alto pago in Jerez.
The wine looks back to a period in Andalucían history before fortification became the norm, when unfortified whites known as vino de Manzanilla were held in higher regard than the area's fortified wines. Now fifteen vintages strong, the project began with Dirk Niepoort and Quim Vila of Vila Viniteca alongside Equipo Navazos, and it has helped return the style to circulation in Spain. The fruit is hand-harvested from a mature parcel in Macharnudo Alto, sometimes called the Montrachet of Jerez, where a particular albariza chalk known as Tosca de Barajuelas gives low yields of thick-skinned grapes and a fine, saline character. Under Eduardo Ojeda, it ferments naturally in a forty-year-old bota filled to five-sixths of its capacity so a thin veil of flor can form, and matures under that flor for some eleven months before bottling without fortification.
Drink now or keep for a few years; serve at 10–12°C with grilled prawns, jamón ibérico or a piece of roast turbot.
