Nicole Lamarche Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits comes from an east-facing parcel planted in 1979 in the hills above Vosne-Romanée.

The Hautes Côtes de Nuits sits in the hills behind the main slope, higher and cooler than the Côte itself, and it has become a considerably more reliable source of good Pinot Noir as the climate has warmed. Lamarche holds 1.5 hectares here, in the hamlet of Concœur above Vosne-Romanée. The parcel was planted on limestone-rich soils in 1979 and faces due east, catching the morning sun and keeping acidity intact. The winemaking follows the same pattern as the rest of the range, with gentle extraction and only a light touch of oak, so the wine stays racy and red-fruited rather than heavy. It is the sort of Bourgogne that shows what a serious grower can do at the bottom of the range, and it remains one of the better-value wines in the cellar.

Drink over the next four or five years. Serve at 16°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or a mushroom tart.
