Description
Olivier Leflaive Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is a white Burgundy from the largest premier cru vineyard in Meursault, on the southern side of the village towards Puligny.
Charmes sits at around 260 metres on a gentle slope facing east to south, where soils rich in clay and silt give Chardonnay with real breadth. Olivier Leflaive set up his house in Puligny-Montrachet in 1984, and it has grown into one of the Côte de Beaune's most dependable names for white wine, working with its own vines and with long-standing growers. The fruit is picked by hand, pressed as whole bunches and fermented in oak barrels, where it also goes through malolactic fermentation. It matures on its lees in barrel, with only a modest share of new oak, and then rests in tank ahead of bottling.
Serve lightly chilled, at around 11 to 13 degrees, so the texture and length are not muted. It is a generous, layered style of Chardonnay that suits roast chicken, lobster with butter, scallops or veal in a cream sauce. It drinks well young with a short decant and should reward five to ten years in the cellar.
