Description
Olivier Leflaive Santenay Rouge is a Pinot Noir from the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, where the slope turns and the prices ease.
Santenay is the last significant commune of the Côte de Beaune before the Côte Chalonnaise begins, and it is mainly red wine country, planted largely to Pinot Noir on limestone and marl slopes facing east and south-east. The village was known for its thermal springs and its casino long before most drinkers knew it for wine, and it remains among the more affordable addresses on the Côte d'Or. Olivier Leflaive founded his maison in Puligny-Montrachet in 1984, and while the house is best known for whites, its reds are handled with the same care: careful sourcing, gentle extraction and ageing in oak barrel with new wood kept in check.
Serve at around 16 degrees, ideally after a short time open, with duck, mushroom dishes or roast lamb.
