Description

Olivier Merlin Bourgogne Rouge is a red Burgundy from a domaine far better known for the white wines of the Mâconnais.

Olivier and Corinne Merlin arrived at La Roche Vineuse in 1987, taking over the Domaine du Vieux Saint-Sorlin, and made their name applying Côte d'Or winemaking to Mâconnais Chardonnay; their son Théo now works with them. Reds are the smaller part of the story, though the domaine has long had an interest in them, including vines in the Beaujolais crus to the south. The Bourgogne appellation is the regional tier of the Burgundian hierarchy, covering Pinot Noir grown within the delimited vineyards of the region, and in the hands of a serious grower it is one of the more rewarding corners of any list. Pinot Noir has been grown in Burgundy since at least the fourteenth century, when Philippe le Hardi ordered the uprooting of Gamay from the Côte.

Serve lightly chilled at around 15 degrees with charcuterie, roast chicken or a mushroom tart.
