Description
Oratoire St Martin Cairanne Reserve des Seigneurs Blanc is a biodynamic old-vine white built around Clairette planted in 1935.
Cairanne is far better known for its reds, but its limestone soils and altitude make it one of the southern Rhône's more convincing sources of white wine, giving fruit that holds acidity through a hot summer. The Alary brothers farm meticulously here and their old vines average only twenty-five hectolitres per hectare. The 2021 blend is thirty per cent Clairette planted in 1935, with Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris also dating from the 1930s, and co-planted Roussanne and Marsanne from a plot surrounded by pine trees established in 1982. The fruit was fermented without additions and raised in the domaine's old concrete tanks, a low-input approach that leaves the vineyard work to do the talking. The energy and mineral freshness of the wine come from the sites rather than the cellar.
Drink over the next four or five years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled king prawns or a herbed goat's cheese.
