Pascal Jolivet Pouilly Fumé 2024

Pascal Jolivet Pouilly Fumé is a Sauvignon Blanc from the eastern bank of the Loire, directly across the river from Sancerre.

Pouilly-Fumé lies around the town of Pouilly-sur-Loire and grows the same grape as its famous neighbour, on soils that include a good deal of flint, known locally as silex. The fumé of the name is generally taken to refer to that flinty ground rather than to smoke or to oak, of which there is none here. Pascal Jolivet established his house in Sancerre in 1987 and works across both appellations, favouring indigenous yeasts, long cool fermentations in stainless steel and as little handling as possible, on the view that the vineyard rather than the cellar should set the terms. The appellation is a good deal smaller than Sancerre across the river, and its wines are seen less often outside France.

Serve well chilled with goat's cheese, oysters, asparagus or grilled white fish.
