Description

Paul Gadenne Chignin Bergeron Roussanne comes from a 0.4-hectare plot of forty-year-old vines yielding rarely more than 25 hectolitres per hectare.

Bergeron is the Savoie name for Roussanne, and Chignin-Bergeron is the only place in the region where the variety is grown seriously. It ripens late and needs the warmest, steepest sites, which is why it is confined to the south-facing slopes above the Combe de Savoie. Gadenne's plot lies in the Chignin commune at 400 metres, facing south-west, on soils that carry more sand and loam than his clay-heavier parcels nearby. The vines are around forty years old and give meagre yields. Fruit is picked by hand, fermented in stainless steel and bottled after eight months, so the wine's weight comes from the grape and the site rather than from oak. Roussanne handled this way keeps its natural texture without turning heavy.

Drink over the next four or five years with roast chicken, freshwater fish or a soft washed-rind cheese. Serve at 10-12°C.
