Description
Pierre-Marie Chermette Beaujolais Origine Vieilles Vignes comes from four densely planted hectares of dark granite at Saint-Vérand.
Saint-Vérand sits in the southern part of Beaujolais, in country that carries the plain Beaujolais appellation rather than one of the ten crus. Chermette's parcel is an exception to the general run of the district: a pocket of dark granite that goes a long way to explaining the depth and mineral character of the wine, which reads at cru level more often than not. Vine age helps too, ranging from thirty-five to eighty-five years. The planting is dense, which keeps yields down per vine. The result is consistently deeper, plumper and silkier than the domaine's entry-level Griottes bottling. The winemaking follows the house pattern, with hand harvesting, natural whole-bunch fermentation and ageing in large old wood rather than barrique, so nothing sits between the granite and the glass.
Drinking well now and holding four to six years. Serve at 15-16°C with charcuterie, roast pork or a soft-rind cheese.
