Description

Pio Cesare Ornato is the house's flagship Barolo, from a vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba.

Serralunga's older, poorer soils produce the most structured wines in Barolo, and Ornato has been Pio Cesare's single-vineyard bottling since the family bought the site in 1985. The house dates from 1881 and its cellars in Alba sit against the Roman walls. Fermentation is with native yeast, and the wine spends time in both French barriques and large Slavonian casks before a long rest in bottle.

Decant well ahead and serve at 17 degrees with roast beef, game or truffled pasta. It rewards twenty-five years.
