Description
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo DOCG Colonnello is a single vineyard Barolo from one of three neighbouring parcels in the Bussia amphitheatre at Monforte d'Alba.
Aldo Conterno left the family firm in 1969 to set up on his own in the Bussia district of Monforte d'Alba, and the estate is now among the most admired in Piedmont. Colonnello is the lowest lying of the three parcels the estate bottles separately, sitting below Romirasco and beside Cicala on the calcareous marl slopes of Bussia Soprana. The Nebbiolo planted here is of the Michet and Lampia subvarieties, the two clones long favoured in the Barolo zone. Winemaking follows the traditional line of the house, with a long fermentation on skins and maturation in large Slavonian oak casks rather than small barrels, followed by a further stretch in bottle before release.
Suited to braised beef, game birds, truffles or aged Piedmontese cheeses; decant well ahead, serve at about 18 degrees, and expect it to reward long cellaring.
