Description
Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Rosso Quartetto is a four grape blend from Monforte d'Alba, an unusual departure from an estate built on Nebbiolo alone.
Aldo Conterno left the family firm in 1969 to set up on his own in the Bussia district of Monforte d'Alba, and the estate is now among the most admired in Piedmont. The Langhe DOC is the broad appellation covering the hills around Alba, and it gives producers room to work outside the strict varietal rules of Barolo. Quartetto, as the name suggests, is built from four varieties, with Nebbiolo joined by grapes not native to the region, a combination that would be impossible under the Barolo regulations. The wine is matured in French oak barrels. Blends of this kind appeared across the Langhe from the 1980s, when Piedmontese growers began experimenting with international varieties alongside their traditional plantings.
A versatile red for roast and grilled meat, hard cheese or a plate of pasta with a rich sauce; serve at around 17 degrees.
