Description
Alanda Tinto is Quinta da Muradella's core Monterrei red, a co-fermented blend of local varieties from a mosaic of high-altitude plots.
Monterrei sits in south-eastern Galicia against the Portuguese border, and its patchwork of slate, granite and clay soils is very much the point of this wine. Jose Luis Mateo farms organically across a spread of small, high vineyards, and Alanda Tinto works as a portrait of that landscape: Mencia with Bastardo, the variety known elsewhere as Merenzao or Trousseau, plus Garnacha Tintorera and a small proportion of the white Dona Blanca. About a third of the fruit is destemmed and everything is co-fermented together. The wine then spends 15 months in used oak barrels and a further six months in vat before bottling, an ageing regime aimed at texture rather than oak flavour. Shown blind, earlier releases have been read as premier cru Burgundy, which speaks to the perfume and the lacy tannins rather than to any resemblance in variety.
Drinking well now, with the balance for medium-term cellaring. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom risotto or grilled lamb.
