Description
Quinta da Muradella Monterrei Gorvia Tinto is a Mencía-led field blend given an unusually long maceration after fermentation has finished.
Gorvia is Muradella's home site in the Monterrei valley of south-eastern Galicia, and it supplies both the estate's white and this red. José Luis Mateo has spent three decades recovering old local varieties in the region, and the planting here reflects that work: a little over ninety per cent Mencía, with the balance made up of Bastardo and Caiño. Mencía in Galicia gives perfumed, cool-fruited reds with fine tannin and firm acidity, closer in build to the Loire or Burgundy than to central Spain, which is why growers here reach for the Burgundian comparison. The fruit was fermented with sixty per cent whole bunches in a wooden vat, then left on skins for a remarkable six months after fermentation ended before being racked into a variety of old casks for ageing. Nothing about the wine is designed for immediate impact.
Give it a short decant or time in the glass. Serve at 16°C with roast poultry, grilled pork or braised lentils.
