Quinta do Noval LBV Unfiltered 2017

Quinta do Noval LBV Unfiltered is made only from the quinta's own fruit and treated in the cellar exactly like a Vintage Port.

Quinta do Noval created the first Late Bottled Vintage in 1958, and this remains the unfiltered style, which is the one closest in character to Vintage Port. The grapes are noble Douro varieties grown on the estate above Pinhão — Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Sousão — and they are trodden by foot in the quinta's traditional stone lagares, then macerated across a three-day fermentation to draw out colour and tannin before fortification. The difference from a Vintage Port lies in the ageing: four, sometimes five years in wooden vats rather than the usual two, which softens the structure and readies the wine for bottling without losing its shape. Because it is not filtered it will throw a deposit, so the bottle should be stood upright and decanted.

Decant it off its sediment and serve at 16–18°C with dark chocolate, walnuts or a strong blue cheese; an opened bottle will keep a couple of weeks.
