Quinta do Noval LBV Unfiltered 2018

Quinta do Noval LBV Unfiltered is a late bottled vintage port from the estate that pioneered the category in 1958.

Late bottled vintage port is drawn from a single year and aged in wood for four to six years before bottling, and most of it is filtered and stabilised for immediate drinking. Quinta do Noval, in the Pinhão valley of the Douro, chose a different path when it bottled the first LBV in 1958 and has stayed with it: only estate-grown fruit of vintage-port quality, trodden by foot, and bottling without filtration. The grapes are stomped in the quinta's traditional stone lagares and macerate through a three-day fermentation to draw out the polyphenols, before fortification with grape spirit arrests the ferment and leaves the natural sweetness in place. The absence of filtration keeps a considerably richer style that shares some of the depth and structure of Noval's Vintage Port, with wild berry and blackcurrant fruit, dried peel and Christmas spice, and firm but polished tannins.

Ready to drink and worth a decade or more; because it is unfiltered it throws a deposit, so decant. Serve at around 16-18°C with dark chocolate, Stilton or walnuts and dried figs.
