Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port 1996

Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port is made from a single small parcel of ungrafted vines and is the most sought-after Port in the world.

Quinta do Noval sits above the Pinhão valley in the Cima Corgo, the heart of the Douro. Nacional comes from a single 2.5-hectare parcel of ungrafted vines beside the cellars, and the name refers to those original rootstocks rather than to the Touriga Nacional grape, which makes up only about 30 per cent of the planting. The rest is a field mix of the best Port varieties: Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão at roughly 20 per cent from sixty-year-old vines, Tinta Roriz and some Sousão, with the vines averaging around fifty years of age. Yields are minuscule, near 15 hectolitres per hectare, and the tight bunches of small, deeply coloured grapes give a Port of unusual concentration and finesse. It is declared only in appropriate years, and when it is, between 100 and 300 cases are made.

Vintage Port of this stature needs decades and should be decanted off its sediment before serving. Match with Stilton, walnuts and dark chocolate, at 16-18°C.
