Description
Quinta do Noval Nacional is a Vintage Port made from a single 2.5-hectare parcel of ungrafted vines beside the cellars, and is the most collected Port in the world.
Quinta do Noval sits above the Pinhão valley in the Cima Corgo, the heart of the Douro. The Nacional parcel takes its name not from Touriga Nacional but from the fact that the vines grow on their own roots, ungrafted and so in direct contact with the soil of the nation. The plot is planted to a field mix of the best Port varieties: Touriga Nacional accounts for roughly 30 per cent, alongside Touriga Franca, about 20 per cent Tinto Cão on sixty-year-old vines, Tinta Roriz and some Sousão, with an average vine age of around fifty years. Yields are tiny, near 15 hl/ha, and the small, thick-skinned bunches give a Port of unusual concentration and finesse. It is declared only in suitable years, and when it is, production runs to between 100 and 300 cases.
Built for decades in bottle and best decanted well ahead. Serve at 16 to 18°C with a hard aged cheese, walnuts, or simply on its own after a meal.
