Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port 2020

Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port comes from a single 2.5-hectare parcel of ungrafted vines beside the estate's cellars.

The Nacional plot lies within Quinta do Noval, immediately next to the winery, and is planted on its own roots rather than on grafted rootstock; that is where the name comes from, vines in direct contact with the soil of the nation. Contrary to a common assumption it is not named after Touriga Nacional, although that variety accounts for roughly thirty per cent of the planting. The remainder is a mix of the best Douro varieties, including Touriga Franca, about twenty per cent Tinto Cão from sixty-year-old vines, Tinta Roriz and some Sousão, with an average vine age of around fifty years. Yields are minuscule, near 15 hectolitres per hectare, and the bunches are small and tightly packed. Nacional is bottled only in the years the estate considers appropriate, and the quantity released is always very small.

Built for decades in bottle and best left well alone for now; decant several hours ahead and serve at 16-18°C with blue cheese, walnuts or simply on its own after a meal.
