Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port 2022

Quinta do Noval Nacional is a Vintage Port made from a single 2.5-hectare parcel of ungrafted vines beside the cellars, and is the rarest of the great Ports.

The plot lies within the Quinta do Noval estate above the Pinhão valley in the Cima Corgo. Its name has nothing to do with the grape Touriga Nacional, as is often assumed; the vines are called Nacional because they grow on their own original roots, directly attached to the soil of the nation, having never been grafted onto American rootstock. The parcel is planted to a range of the best Douro varieties, with Touriga Nacional accounting for about thirty per cent, Touriga Franca, some sixty-year-old Tinto Cão at around twenty per cent, Tinta Roriz and a little Sousão. Average vine age is close to fifty years and yields are minuscule, in the region of fifteen hectolitres per hectare. The tight bunches of small, deeply coloured berries are foot-trodden in lagares and the wine is released only in years the house considers worthy of the name.

This is a Port for very long cellaring; decant well ahead and serve at 16-18°C with mature hard cheese, walnuts or simply on its own.
