Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port 2023

Quinta do Noval Nacional is a vintage Port made from a single 2.5-hectare plot of ungrafted vines beside the cellars, and it is among the rarest wines in the world.

The Nacional plot sits within the Quinta do Noval estate in the Douro, next to the winery. Its name refers not to the grape Touriga Nacional but to the fact that the vines grow on their own roots, directly attached to the soil of the nation. The plot is field-planted with a range of Douro varieties: Touriga Nacional accounts for around 30 per cent, alongside Touriga Franca, roughly 20 per cent Tinta Cão from 60-year-old vines, Tinta Roriz and some Sousão. Average vine age is about 50 years. Yields are tiny, around 15 hectolitres per hectare, and the small, tightly packed, deeply coloured berries give a Port of great concentration that nonetheless keeps an unusual refinement. It is released only in suitable years and in very small quantities.

This is a wine for the long cellar, several decades if you have the patience; decant well ahead and serve at 16-18C with mature Stilton or simply on its own after dinner.
