Description
Quinta do Noval Tawny 10yo is the youngest of the house's age-indicated tawnies, matured in small old oak until the average age of the blend reaches ten years.
Tawny Port is aged oxidatively in seasoned wood rather than in bottle, so it loses colour and develops the nutty, dried-fruit character that separates it from a Vintage Port. Quinta do Noval sits above the Pinhão valley in the Cima Corgo, and this blend draws about half its fruit from the estate itself, the balance from long-standing A-grade growers in the heart of the Douro. Alongside Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional and Sousão now contribute. The grapes are foot-trodden and fermented in the traditional granite lagares of the quinta, then fortified with grape spirit to arrest the ferment and leave the wine sweet. Ageing follows in old oak pipes of 640 litres, small enough to give steady, gentle oxidation, and the ten-year statement refers to the average age of the wines in the final blend.
It is ready on release and, unlike a Vintage Port, keeps for weeks once opened; serve lightly chilled at 12-14°C with almonds, crème brûlée or hard sheep's cheese.
