Quinta do Noval Tawny 50 Year Old NV

Quinta do Noval Tawny 50 Year Old is one of the first releases in a port category only formally introduced in 2022.

Until recently the oldest official age indication for tawny port was 40 years; the 50 Year Old category was created in January 2022 and Noval launched its version in October 2024. The wine is drawn from estate-grown fruit in the Vale de Mendiz, in the Cima Corgo heart of the Douro, from traditional multi-varietal field-blend plantings taking in Touriga Nacional, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca among others. Aged tawny is matured in seasoned oak pipes rather than in bottle, and over five decades a very high proportion of the volume is lost to evaporation. What remains has concentrated considerably, with the sweetness pulled back and the colour faded towards amber, leaving a wine of intensity and austere purity rather than fruit.

Serve small measures at around 14°C, or very lightly chilled, and expect an opened bottle to hold for weeks; it suits crème brûlée, walnut tart or a mature hard cheese.
