Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2018

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is a single-quinta declaration drawn entirely from the estate's own vines above the Pinhão valley.

Vintage port is bottled young, after about two years in wood, and does the rest of its ageing in glass, which is why it throws a heavy deposit and needs decanting. Quinta do Noval is one of the few great Douro houses whose vintage port comes from a single property, and this wine is drawn from three core parcels near the winery; the declaration represents only seven per cent of the estate's production. The blend shifts each year according to which varieties performed, and here Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca dominate, with Tinta Cão and Sousão filling out the balance. All the grapes were trodden by foot and fermented in traditional granite lagares with temperature control at 28°C, the fermentation arrested by the addition of grape spirit. The wine then spent eighteen months in wooden vats, and finishes at 100 grams per litre of residual sugar.

Approachable in its youth but built for decades, and it must be decanted off its sediment. Serve at 16-18°C with Stilton, walnuts or a dark chocolate dessert.
