Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2019

Quinta do Noval's Vintage Port is a single-quinta wine drawn entirely from the house's own vineyards above the Pinhão valley.

Vintage Port is declared only in years a house considers good enough, bottled young after about two years in wood and left to mature in glass for decades. Noval's estate sits on the steep terraces of the Cavadinha tributary in the Cima Corgo, the heart of the Douro, and the wine is made from a strict selection of its own fruit rather than bought grapes; this declaration represents only fourteen per cent of the property's entire production. The blend changes each year according to which varieties performed best, and here follows the traditional Douro field-blend template of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz. Grapes are foot-trodden in temperature-controlled granite lagares, the old method that extracts colour and tannin gently from thick-skinned Douro fruit, with the ferment arrested by grape spirit while sugar remains. The wine was then matured eighteen months in old wooden barrels before bottling.

It can be broached young with decanting but is built for thirty years or more; the sediment means it must be decanted. Serve with Stilton, walnuts or dark chocolate at 16-18°C.
