Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2022

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is declared only in the finest years from a rigorous selection of around seven per cent of the estate's vines.

Quinta do Noval sits above the Pinhão valley in the Cima Corgo, the heart of the demarcated Douro, on steep schist terraces. The house has been directed by Christian Seely since 1993 and remains one of the few great Port shippers whose flagship wine comes from a single quinta rather than a blend of bought parcels. Touriga Nacional takes the lion's share of this blend, with smaller volumes of Tinto Cão, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca. The grapes are foot-trodden in temperature-controlled granite lagares, the traditional Douro method that extracts colour and tannin gently from whole berries, and fermentation is arrested with grape spirit to leave the sweetness of a Vintage Port. The wine then matured for eighteen months in old wooden vats before bottling unfiltered, with residual sugar around 89 grams per litre.

It is more accessible in youth than many declarations but will repay decades in the cellar; decant and serve at 16-18°C with Stilton, walnuts or dark chocolate.
