Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2023

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is a declared vintage Port from a single Douro estate that has controlled every step from vine to bottle since 1715.

Most vintage Port is assembled by shippers from purchased fruit, but Noval is one estate and one vineyard, farmed and vinified by its own team in the Pinhão valley. Founded in 1715, the property has changed hands only twice in three centuries. Under Christian Seely the house has declared with unusual regularity, behaving more like a Bordeaux château than a traditional shipper. Ripening was even, and the lagares were reported as clean and aromatic, with good phenolic balance and freshness. Several parcels of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Sousão performed particularly well, and the ungrafted Nacional and old field-blend parcels stood out. The final wine draws on twelve separate lots, matured for 18 months in old wooden barrels and bottled with 92 grams per litre of residual sugar.

It will repay two decades or more in the cellar; decant and serve at 16-18C with Stilton, walnuts or a dark chocolate tart.
