Quinta do Passadouro Vintage Port 2017

Quinta do Passadouro Vintage Port is a single-estate vintage port from the Cima Corgo, made in a more approachable register than its stablemate Noval.

Passadouro dates from the eighteenth century and lies close to the village of Vale de Mendiz, in the heart of the demarcated Douro. It was run for decades by the Bohrmann family, who also own a domaine in Meursault, with Dirk Niepoort in charge of winemaking for a period, and was acquired by Quinta do Noval in 2019, with the brand and staff kept in place. The vineyard is in two principal parcels: one in the schist of the Pinhão Valley, where most of Noval's own vines lie and which ranks among the finest terroir in the Douro, and one in the Roncão Valley. Plantings run from 100 to 300 metres in altitude and the blend takes in Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz. Vinification follows broadly the same traditional path as Noval's own vintage port, but the result is more medium-bodied, buoyant and open-knit.

It can be broached young but will reward fifteen to twenty years; decant off the sediment. Serve at 16–18°C with Stilton, walnuts or a dark chocolate tart.
