Description
Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese is a sweet Rheingau Riesling from the estate’s Grosse Lage, the summit of the Weil hierarchy.
Weingut Robert Weil at Kiedrich in the Rheingau has been a benchmark for the sweeter Prädikat styles since the late nineteenth century, and Wilhelm Weil is widely credited with restoring them to prominence in the modern era. The steep, rocky Kiedricher Berg vineyards above the village allow the estate to reach high must weights while retaining acidity and a pronounced mineral thread, which is what keeps these wines from turning heavy. Fruit is picked selectively by hand, berry by berry where necessary, and the Auslesen of this vintage were harvested without botrytis influence, giving a clean, bright expression of the style rather than a botrytised one. Gräfenberg is the great site of Kiedrich: steep, south-facing and stony, terraced in places, and farmed by Weil as the reference point against which its other vineyards are measured. Wilhelm Weil has said there is only one tip on a pyramid, and Gräfenberg is it. In a wine of this Prädikat the site shows as length and lift rather than weight, the sweetness held by acidity into a long, mineral finish.
Approachable now but capable of decades in bottle; serve at 8–10°C with apple or apricot tart, Roquefort, or simply on its own.
