Description
Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Auslese is a sweet Rheingau Riesling from the estate’s 3.8-hectare monopole below the ruined Scharfenstein tower.
Weingut Robert Weil at Kiedrich in the Rheingau has been a benchmark for the sweeter Prädikat styles since the late nineteenth century, and Wilhelm Weil is widely credited with restoring them to prominence in the modern era. The steep, rocky Kiedricher Berg vineyards above the village allow the estate to reach high must weights while retaining acidity and a pronounced mineral thread, which is what keeps these wines from turning heavy. Fruit is picked selectively by hand, berry by berry where necessary, and the Auslesen of this vintage were harvested without botrytis influence, giving a clean, bright expression of the style rather than a botrytised one. Turmberg takes its name from the surviving tower of the twelfth-century Burg Scharfenstein above the vineyard. Its phyllite base and thin topsoil give a racier, more mineral fruit than the estate’s other sites, which suits a wine of this ripeness. Bottled at 8.5% alcohol with 128 grams per litre of residual sugar against 9.7 grams of acidity, it is sweet but taut.
It can be drunk now and will hold for decades; serve at 8–10°C with fruit tarts, blue cheese or foie gras, or on its own after a meal.
