Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken 1.5L MAGNUM 2021

Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken in magnum is a dry Rheingau Riesling from a 3.8-hectare monopole that Weil had reinstated as a classified site in 2005.

Turmberg — tower hill — is named for the last surviving tower of Burg Scharfenstein, a twelfth-century castle whose ruins stand above the vineyard. The 1971 German wine law folded the site into neighbouring Gräfenberg; Weil succeeded in having it restored to the vineyard register as a separate holding in 2005, reflecting a terroir that had historically been treated as distinct. The vines are between thirty and fifty years old. A base of phyllite, metamorphosed slate, under thin topsoil gives fruit of more mineral voltage than the estate’s Klosterberg and a generally racier wine — the relationship is something like great Saint-Aubin set against great Chassagne. Though Turmberg would qualify as Grosse Lage, Weil chooses to bottle it as Erste Lage, reserving the top tier for Gräfenberg. The wine was raised entirely in doppelstückfass for ten months.

Drinking well now and good for a decade, with the magnum slowing that down; serve at 10–12°C with roast pork, grilled white fish or a mushroom tart.
